SWISS CHEESE CANDLES

 
Materials:
Empty milk carton
Long candlewick
Stick or pencil
Scissors
Small piece of clay or tape
Ice cubes
Yellow wax dye
Wax*

* Prepare for the craft by melting the wax. Most wax comes in large bars, but it melts faster when it’s broken into smaller pieces. You can do this with a hammer and chisel. To melt the wax, use a "double boiler" method – one pan holding the wax chunks is placed inside another pan containing boiling water.

Some things to remember:
 
  • -The boiling water sometimes splashes, so make sure the wax pan is tall enough so that the wax and water do not mix.
  •  
  • -Make sure you keep adding water to the bottom pan as it evaporates. Add yellow wax dye (available at your local craft store) to get the desired “swiss cheese” color.

Start with an empty milk carton, which has been cleaned and dried. Cut the carton to 1 inch above the desired height of your finished candle.

Fix a long wick to the bottom of the carton with a small piece of clay or tape. Wrap the excess wick (sticking out from the top of the carton) around a stick or pencil. The stick/pencil should keep the wick in its position in the center of the carton.

Fill the carton with ice cubes. Be careful not to knock the wick out of place

Pour the wax into the carton and over the ice, making sure to cover the ice completely. Set aside the carton and wait for the wax to cool and harden completely before moving on to the next step (the time this takes may vary).

Peal the carton away from the candle(while holding over a sink or bucket).
 
 
 
 
Special Safety Note: Melting wax should never be left unattended. Please use added caution when handling hot wax and follow the wax manufacturer’s warnings and instructions very carefully.
